This blog post is not a comparison of Firefox and Netscape 8.
I’ve been doing some prototype and pre-beta testing of Netscape 8, which is built off the Mozilla Firefox code. Netscape has recently released the Beta version, and made it available to the general public. When such a variation of the Mozilla code is made available, people want to know the differences between the variation, and the Mozilla code. In this case, we’re talking about the differences between Netscape 8 and Mozilla Firefox. Other than the obvious user-interface differences, the are many major differences. There should be a document that outlines all the differences.
The most popular page on my site, aside from the top-level page, is the Mozilla Application Suite vs Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird page. Second is The Relationship And History Between Mozilla And Netscape. Therefore it would be natural for me to be the one to write up something on the differences between Firefox and Netscape 8. . . . I’m not.
Netscape 8 is a product I have little interest in supporting. The plugin used to access Internet Explorer’s rendering engine opens Netscape 8 to the same security vulnerabilities Internet Explorer has, regardless of what rendering engine is being used.
Still, I feel a comparison page would be a good thing. I encourage anyone who is up to the task, to write one up.
I agree. Why support any product that turns a “personal tool bar” into a “corporate whore bar”.
I dunno, i just downloaded it. I removed the personal toolbar which was your ‘corporate’ bar. The design is fairly fresh looking, i like it. The popup blocker and History erase features on the toolbar are nice. The toolbar editing is actually a really nice feature if you take a look at it.
Hey, netscape 6 was far worse
I think this is funny:
“Netscape 8 is a product I have little interest in supporting.”
Yet you have a link towards netscape…
“Yet you have a link towards netscape…”
Hyperlinks are so people know what I am referring to. 😉
I should also clarify what I mean by “support.” I volunteer in technical support venues, providing technical help to users. When I (or your Internet Service Provider) “support” something, it means that I provide technical help for that something.
I just thought I should throw in my two cents. I just downloaded netscape 8 and I really like it. It has a few wierd quirks about it that makes me wonder if they hurried it’s release. I like the multibar’s support for RSS feeds and the fact that I can finally see all web pages in the way they were meant to be seen. I used Firefox before NS8 was released, but I think I found a new favorite with Netscape!
First off, I realize that IE has a HUGE number of security holes, but 2 other browsers I use, Mozilla Firefox & Opera, have their share too. That being written, my FAVORITE browser right now is Firefox, because of all the cool plugins, including one that creates a full-screen mode just like IE’s. But I DO like Netscape. I realize that it’s no safer than IE when using the IE rendering engine (and maybe otherwise as well; I’m not intimate with the technology), but I DO like being able to access ALL (or almost all) IE content in another browser, especially a well-programmed, tabbed one. MusicNow works GREAT in Netscape, though I installed the Active-X plugin with IE to be on the safe side, as I did so with Netscape yesterday & had trouble accessing the site afterward until this morning.
I really enjoy using Firefox with its creative plugins and its intuitive yet simple interface. I do web development and require to test across browsers a lot. The other browser I use is IE. There is one thing I wish Forefox had which IE has (and that makes my life quite easy.. if I am not being too selfish) is the ability to search within a textarea in Firefox. Due to this one fact all my colleagues use IE and almost ridicule Firefox for not being mature enough.. I mean I know what they are missing w/o Firefox but sometimes it becomes hard!!

I couldn’t agree more. The inability to search within textareas and othr form items (iframes as well I believe) is an absolute necessity.
Can you imagine trying to do a search and replace on CMS content any other way?
How frustrating. I’d be VERY inetrested in hearing any solutions/developments in this regard.

“ability to search a text area”
I’m using Firefox 1.0.6– go Edit>Find in this page and start typing– the search engine is smoother, quicker and better than IE6. The Firefox development team really should get credit– I only recently started using this (after just one two many problems with IE6,) and I have yet to see a problem highlighted on a board like this that had not already been addressed– MickeySoft could learn something here. You do need to make sure you have the most recent build and download the extensions and plug-ins, but since they’re all free and so small even a dial-up can handle them, this is no hassle. Rod
How to Find in Textareas in Firefox

I mainly use Internet Explorer and I do not have any problems with it, only thing it aint safe when you go to bad websites. Mozilla Firefox and Netscape seem to have the security, but I dislike Firefox, because Firefox is not a program businesses uses, too many people use it and make it spyware over the Internet. Its not spyware for people who think it is. The main reason I hate Mozilla Firefox is because there is no ActiveX feature in it (I need activex for remote access to my pc). I thought that Netscape will be just like this, but Netscape 8 has the option to switch from Firefox and Internet Explorer style and that way, you can have features IE has which aren’t included in FireFox, which is ActiveX. Netscape Rocks!!! When you use Netscape 8, you have more security than Internet Explorer and runs just like FireFox, only thing more compatible. If you are not comfortable with the Internet Explorer style, switch to the Firefox style and it will act just like Firefox, only thing more secure and customizable.
sorry to annoy but activex is unsafe and can easily be hacked or cracked just download IE Tab for Firefox if you reall need ie but no spyware and that junk for me thanks.
Netscape Navigator 9 is based on the latest Mozilla technologies… Netscape 8, 7, etc is based on the latest Mozilla technologies…
