When you type a web address in the location bar of Mozilla Firefox, a drop-down list will appear, showing entries in your browser history that match what you have typed so far. Sometimes people only want entries that have been previously typed. Well, there’s a preference setting for that.
Enter about:config in the location bar.
Search for the preference browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped.
Modify the value to true.
Chris what about the autofill feature in browser search box.If I don’t want the list of previous searchs to open when I type in a term can I change that setting? I tried the browser autofill and that didn’t change the search site box. thanks Terry
I prefer the old 2.0 style Mozilla Firefox url bar and I don’t know how to get that back with 3.0 and I have no idea where to send this to, could you help? Thanks in advance
I mean the one that doesn’t search based on the site title, instead only on site address. Thanks
Sadly, Jay, it is not possible to get the usual delightful address bar back. See, Mozilla got some fancypants, cocaine-reeling interaction designers together and the guy in charge had them design this CrapBar and then he forced it on everyone–no chance to get the old one back. You can kill it, though: got o about:config and change this to the given value or 0: “browser.urlbar.maxRichResults;-1”.
That kills the stupid CrapBar, but as far as I am aware, I can’t get the old one back. They decided not to put in a toggle for that because they turned into evil Microsoftians.
There’s an add-on for Firefox 2 style urlbar drop-down list:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227
Just download the add-on called “oldBar”. That brings you right back to Firefox v2 address bar.
Unfortunately the add-on only formats the results to look like they did in v2… It takes up less room, but it’s still auto-searching not auto-completing. This is ridiculous.

A chap by the name of Kakkoii has been working on a true fix and has come up with this add-on:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7637
It still searches page descriptions, but it limits much of the noise that the new bar throws at you.
