Why I want a Support logo

As Tara bloggd, she and David are working on a logo for the Support project, and want input about how others define the Support project. Getting a Firefox Support logo is something I’ve wanted for a long while. Not necessarily to establish an identity for the web site, but because it lays the foundation for some cooler stuff. Namely, a Firefox Support search plugin.

Imagine this: A Firefox user is having a problem with Firefox, or just has a question about how to use Firefox. Instead of visiting support.mozilla.com, he/she just calls up the search plugin in the search bar, and types the question (or put it in the Help menu).

In order for that to happen, we need a favicon.
In order for that to happen, we need a logo.

For what it’s worth, there’s already an unofficial search plugin on mycroft.

That’s an interesting perspective. I think first and foremost, though, this logo should be used by the SUMO community. It should be something we as part of this community want to associate ourselves with. What feelings do we get when thinking of SUMO — happiness, pride? What expectations do we want our users to have when visiting the site? Which words best describe the project?

    “Don Henley – Dirty Laundry”
Man, that brings back memories and sparks other ones especially for All She Wants To Do Is Dance.

I remember when the call for action was made on the old SFx for people to volunteer and contribute their time to writing a support article for what would become SUMO. I was literally one of the first of just a few to step up and make a commitment by signing up on what was the original project page that was on the Mozilla Wiki and I also remember participating in the first SUMO conference call.
I also made it clear on the new SUMO contributors page that I had chosen “How to customize the toolbar” as the help article that I would be writing but for some reason that I’m still unsure of, my article was hijacked (for lack of a better word) by someone who
decided to just go right ahead and create the article and totally disregard the fact that it was clearly documented that I would be doing it. I wouldn’t have minded collaborating on or even giving up the article if I had only been given the option.

As you can imagine I was bitter over the incident and especially for the fact that there was no concern shown or remedy offered to ease my frustrations from the whole experience.
As proof of the fact that this story is completely legitimate I refer you to the credits at the bottom of the “How to customize the toolbar” article.

    “Contributors to this page: Chris_Ilias , skulvis , admin , panglea and Ken_Saunders . ”

There has been more than enough time passed since the incident occurred for me to let go of any animosity or grudges that I had that stemmed from that situation and while I still haven’t jumped back in to become a contributor, I have quietly supported SUMO from a distance.

So with all of my yapping here, I do hope that above all you and others reading this will learn to take care of the people who are powering the engine or manning the oars and never take them for granted even if there are another 250 people in line who can jump in to fill a role. It’s not just one person that you’re affecting, it’s that person and everyone that person comes in contact with and so on.

I’ll admit that it does feel good to air this out and I am sincerely happy that SUMO has been a big success. It’s been nice to see it grow up.

    Thanks Chris.
Oh, and you should probably remove my name from the credits in the article that I mentioned.
My biggest and only contribution was my declaration to write it and nothing more.
