1.01. What is "Survivor"?
Survivor is a reality TV game show produced and broadcast on the CBS television network.
For 39 days, 16 strangers are stranded in a remote location.
They are forced to live together and supply their own shelter, food, and other survival necessities.
Every episode of Survivor covers three days of life during the game.
Along with having to live together, they have to compete against each other in challenges.
During each three day cycle they first have to participate in a "reward challenge", in which the winner(s) will receive a prize that will make life during the game easier.
(luxury, tools, food, etc.)
On another day after, they participate in an "immunity challenge".
The winner(s) is immune to being eliminated from the game during that cycle.
On the last day of each three-day cycle, the Survivors must attend Tribal Council; in which each contestant remaining votes secretly to send one fellow contestant out of the game.
The person with the most votes must leave their tribe immediately.
If the immunity challenge has been between two tribes, only the losing tribe goes to tribal council.
If the immunity challenge has been an individual competition, all contestants must go to tribal council, but no-one can vote for the holder of immunity.
As the game continues, the number of contestants remaining decreases.
When there are 9 contestants left, those who are eliminated thereafter become a part of a jury that will vote for which of the final 2 will win the game, an automobile, and one million dollars.
1.02. How does the concept of tribes work?
At the beginning of each season, the 16 contestants are split into two "tribes" of 8.
Each tribe is a separate society, living in separate locations.
The two tribes compete against each other in challenges, and the tribe that loses the immunity challenge goes to tribal council.
At some point during the season the tribes merge into one tribe; and the contestants compete for individual immunity.
The exact timetable and personnel of the tribes has not remained constant:
Season 1: No-one had to switch tribes; and the merger took place on day 19.
Season 2: No-one had to switch tribes; and the merger took place on day 19.
Season 3: On day 13, three contestants from each tribe had to go to the other; and the merger took place on day 20.
Season 4: On day 13, a complete reshuffling of the tribes took place; and the merger took place on day 19.
Season 5: On day 14, all contestants were offered a chance to switch tribes, but no-one took it.
One day 19 the two tribes were forced to live together, and the merger took place on day 26.
Season 6: On day 14, the youngest member of each tribe got to pick each member of their new tribes; and the merger took place on day 19.
1.03. When does Survivor air?
Survivor airs every Thursday night at 8:00pm EST/PST on CBS.
The first episode is sometimes 90 minutes long.
The final episode is 2 hours long, followed by a one-hour reunion show.

1.12. What happens when tribal council votes result in a tie?
The first course of action is to hold another vote, in which the contestants are only allowed to vote for either of the contestants that tied for most votes.
If there is still a tie, than a tie breaker is used.
What the tiebreaker will be is usually unknown.
In seasons 2 and 3, the contestant with the most previous votes will be eliminated.
The first tiebreaker in season 3 had no previous votes to rely on, so the two contestants tied for elimination were given a survival quiz.
The first one to answer a question incorrectly would be eliminated.
In season 4 a different tiebreaker was used.
Every contestant, except for the one with immunity, each had to draw 1 rock from a bag.
The contestant who draws the purple rock, is eliminated.
1.13. Where can I download episodes?
(CBS does not authorize or encourage these downloads.)
Episodes can be downloaded via the newsgroups alt.binaries.multimedia.reality-tv, and alt.binaries.multimedia, and the IRC channel #survivor-central.
See http://www.geocities.com/gluedtothescreen for a tutorial on downloading Survivor via IRC.
1.14. What role does the Early Show play?
The Early Show is CBS's morning show; and since Survivor is CBS's main ratings attraction, there are a lot of Survivor related interviews and news that air on the Early Show.
The morning after each episode, the latest bootee is interviewed on the Early Show.
The new cast is always announced on the Early Show; and after the last episode, the winner is given the million dollar cheque on the Early Show.
1.15. Has the final 2 ever been leaked?
During the filming of Season 6 a tourist there discovered he/she was staying near or at the same hotel as the Survivor crew.
Beginning in January, 2003, this person began posting descriptions of his experiences the previous fall online at a sub-site (Survivor Sucks, Spoilers, "ChillOne's Amazon Vacation Spoilers") of the online message board http://www.ezboard.com.
He/She used the pseudonym "ChillOne" for his posts.
On his Fall 2002 vacation he/she asked questions of crew members and aggressively pursued knowledge of who was voted off when.
At EZBoard, ChillOne never asserted positively what the order would be at any point.
But as it turns out, many of his/her predictions came true.
(Some turned out to be false.)
Using ChillOne's posts and their own sharpened, "Survivor" minds, participants in the EZBoard thread were able to largely discern in advance who would very likely be in final 4 and how the voting would proceed to the final 2.
Several posted their prediction that Jenna would be the winner.
ChillOne is mentioned from time to time here, especially when discussion of Spoilers arises.
Epilogue: On August 5, 2003, ChillOne re-appeared at the EZBoard Survivor Sucks Spoiler site http://pub124.ezboard.com/fsurvivorsucksfrm12.showMessage?topicID=204.topic.
(Registration for the EZBoard site is free.)
ChillOne claims to have completed a 50,000 word book "The Spoiler," which he says will be available soon, as well as a web site.
ChillOne's identity is not known, but because of the timing of his posts relative to the airing of S6 episodes, a consensus appears to exist online that he was truly an insider.
Some of ChillOne's posts were reproduced in this newsgroup.
A groups.google search for "ChillOne" at alt.tv.survivor will yield more details.
1.16. Who has brought a lawsuit against or from the producers of Survivor, and why?
Stacy Stillman suing Survivor over the game being rigged.
Survivor suing Stacy Stillman for breach of contract.
Survivor suing FOX for copying the show and calling it 'Boot Camp'.
Survivor firing cameramen for voting on which contestants made final
two last season.
1.17. Is the contract, which the contestants sign, available for viewing?
With Stacey Stillman's lawsuit against Survivor, a copy of her contract was made available at these URLs:
http://www.thestingray.net/agree1.htm
http://www.thestingray.net/agree2.htm
http://www.thestingray.net/agree3.htm

1.18. Will there be an all-star season?*
Yes; season 8 is scheduled to be an all-star version.
It will take place in the same location as season 7 (Pearl Islands, Panama).
The dates, and cast are yet to be announced.
1.19. Can a contestant vote for him/her self?
No. Even though it's not in writing on the website, Jeff Probst always states this rule during the second last tribal council, to explain why only the holder of immunity can vote.

2.09. What are the "email addy" threads?
The email addy threads are just a joke, in which people post an email address that makes fun of the latest contestant to be voted off.
For instance, when Heidi Strobel was voted off, someone (anyone) would start a thread called "Heidi's email addy", with the body being butiwasthesmartestonehere@guessnot.org.
Anyone can add their own version.
2.10. What is "pagonging"?
Pagonging is a slang verb derived from events in season 1.
The Tagi tribe had formed a voting alliance and eliminated the members of the Pagong tribe "one by one".
When someone uses the term "Pagonging" or "Pagonged", it indicates the action of eliminating the members of an opposing alliance "one by one".
2.11. What is the "snakes and rats" speech?
Snakes and Rats Speech is a reference to Season 1.
Jury member Susan Hawk had felt very bitter toward final 2 contestant Kelly Wiglesworth, and proceeded to give her a very spiteful speech.
She referred to Kelly as a Rat, and to Richard Hatch (the other final 2 contestant) as a snake.
Whenever a jury member gives a spiteful speech, it may be referred to as a snakes and rats speech.
2.12. What is the "purple rock of death"?
The Purple Rock of Death (or just Purple Rock) is a reference to a tie breaker used in season 4, in which rocks were drawn from a bag.
The contestant who draws the purple rock is eliminated.
It is infamous due to it's 100% reliance on luck.
2.13. What is the "loser lodge"?
It is the hotel, where eliminated contestants stay after they are voted out.
2.14. What is the "fake merge"?**
Traditionally, at some point during the season, the two tribes merge into one, with a new name; and the challenges become individual competitions.
During Season 5, at around the time they were expecting the merge (day 19), Jeff Probst announced that the two tribes would now live together on the same beach.
The production staff did what they could to encourage the assumption that this was the merge, yet Jeff never really said "merge", and never gave them any new buffs.
The contestants spent about a day with each other under this false assumption, until they arrived at the IC, and Jeff asked them how life was.
Erin said something like "I can't believe the merge has gone this smoothly", then Jeff made things clear with "You said 'merge'.
I certainly didn't say anything to give that impression.
You are two tribes living on the same beach."

4.02. Have any contestants had medical problems relating to the show?
Yes;
Michael Skupin passed out on a fire, and was eliminated from season 2 due to seriously burned skin.
There have been other less serious problems such as Jessie Camacho, and Tanya Vance being unable to keep down water, resulting in throwing up hurls a drunken teenager would be proud of.
Daniel Lue was hospitalized with malaria after he was eliminated.
Lex van den Berghe suffered so much kidney damage, due to parasites from the water, he was urinating blood after the switch.
He had to be hooked to an IV for two hours, but refused to leave the game.
He came home with four different parasites and two different bacterial strains.
Lindsey Richter had to go to a hospital on day 8 fo season 3, due to dehydration.
During season 4 many contestants were cut by sea urchins, and had to get someone to urinate on the the cut to to alleviate the pain.
The day after Paschal English was eliminated, he passed out due to dehydration, and couldn't attend that night's tribal council as a jury member.
4.03. Who stole the beans in season 3?**
Clarence.
4.04. Did the Season 4 cast know about the season 3 switch?**
Yes.
According to Mark Burnett, "The players saw the switch episode while in their hotel rooms the night before leaving America."
4.05. Did Christy really want Jenna to win Season 6, during the final vote?
Some have speculated that Christy did not read Jeff's lips correctly, thus she thought she was voting Jenna out of the game.
This coupled with her rather weak reasoning of "I lived with her since day 1", and her vow not let Jenna or Heidi win the million dollars, caused many to believe she was covering up her mistake.
This is, however, only speculation.
4.06. What is the "Big Lie" in season 7 (Pearl Islands)?**
In an interview before season 7 began airing, Jeff Probst stated that he was suckered by "the greatest lie ever told on 'Survivor.'"
As of this date, no-one knows what the lie is; but you are free to guess.
