{"id":759,"date":"2016-01-12T12:02:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T16:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ilias.ca\/blog\/?p=759"},"modified":"2019-03-18T19:01:36","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T23:01:36","slug":"do-you-need-to-install-flash-anymore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ilias.ca\/blog\/2016\/01\/do-you-need-to-install-flash-anymore\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you need to install Flash anymore?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If someone asks &#8220;<em>Do I need Java<\/em>&#8220;, my answer is a) most people don&#8217;t need it, and b) to find out if <em>you<\/em> need it, remove it. I did that many years ago and haven&#8217;t needed it. I&#8217;ve been hoping to reach the same point with Flash. I&#8217;d try disabling it, but there are two sites I regularly visit, which sometimes require Flash &#8211; Youtube and Facebook (for videos). Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/1\/27\/7926001\/youtube-drops-flash-for-html5-video-default\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youtube switched to HTML5<\/a>, and recently I found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/12\/18\/10623738\/facebook-now-using-html5-all-videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook started using HTML5 for videos<\/a>, so I decided to try disabling Flash again. This time, I was pleasantly surprised at how many websites no longer use Flash.<\/p>\n<p>Using Firefox on a late 2013 Macbook Pro, here is a list of sites I&#8217;ve found work well with Flash disabled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Youtube<\/li>\n<li>Facebook<\/li>\n<li>Thestar.com<\/li>\n<li>Instagram<\/li>\n<li>CNN<\/li>\n<li>CNET<\/li>\n<li>Vimeo<\/li>\n<li>Dailymotion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are still some holdouts. In my case, I&#8217;m really affected by CTV Toronto News requiring Flash. I also wanted to watch an episode of <em>Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee<\/em>, and that required Flash. Others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BBC<\/li>\n<li>Hulu<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I emailed CTV, and here&#8217;s the response:<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>At this time we currently do not have any future plans to support HTML5. Regardless, your comments have been forwarded to our technical team for review.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided to switch back to thestar.com for local [Toronto] news, now that they&#8217;re over their Rob Ford obsession.<\/p>\n<p>And with that, I can keep Flash disabled. Every now and then I may require it to view some web content, but <strong>for the most part, I don&#8217;t need it<\/strong>.<br \/>\nFlash has been thought of as a must-have plugin, but after disabling it, that wasn&#8217;t the case for me. <strong>A lot of the web has already switched to HTML5<\/strong>.
