(Why: I don&#8217;t know. Automatic marking of all messages as read on exit, is one of the reasons I dislike web-based forums.)<\/p>\n<p>Thunderbird 1.5 can do this, but the setting is hidden. Go to <strong>Tools -&gt; Options -&gt; Advanced -&gt; General<\/strong>, and click on &#8220;<strong>Config Editor<\/strong>.&#8221; In the resulting window, right-click on any of the listed preferences, and select <strong>New -&gt; Boolean<\/strong>. The preference name to enter depends:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">mailnews.mark_message_read.nntp<\/span> for Newsgroups<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">mailnews.mark_message_read.pop3<\/span> for POP3 email folders<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">mailnews.mark_message_read.imap<\/span> for IMAP email folders<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">mailnews.mark_message_read.rss<\/span> for RSS folders<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">mailnews.mark_message_read.none<\/span> for folders in &#8220;Local Folders&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Set the value to <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #333399\">true<\/span>.
