Google Reader alternatives for Firefox

If you use Firefox and need an alternative to Google reader, Feedly isn’t the only option.

First, you can try the live bookmarks feature that’s part of Firefox. Here are instructions on how to use it.

Second, there are plenty of extensions available for reading web feeds. I used to use Sage. Other popular ones:

Third, if you use Mozilla Thunderbird, the email and newsgroups app built on Mozilla, it contains a great rss reader.  For instructions on how to use it visit Thunderbird support – How to Subscribe to News Feeds and Blogs.

Thanks for the advice, but none of these really provide a practical substitute for Reader. Desktop RSS clients are a dime a dozen, but the reason so many people moved to Reader when it appeared is that it solved two real problems.

One, automatically syncing between devices, for those of us who want to check their feeds from different devices – e.g home and work desktops, plus mobile. And two, by moving the checking to a server, you never missed anything due to your computer being switched off for the weekend, or from being out in the wilderness without internet access for a few days – you could rely on Reader to pick up everything.

@simon: Which is why I’m using Tiny Tiny RSS on my home server, and access that from wherever.

Of course, support can be, shall we say, abrasive. Better triple-check that bug you think you found, or be ready to crash in flames without warning in the forums.

But the software is good and allow plugins, which is always a plus.

However, I’m guessing that the point of the post was to point out alternative to those people who can’t afford to have either a home server or a hosted solution.

Not really my sort of thing. My Firefox is heavy enough without making my feed reader an addon.

The ironic part is, I only discovered this today when Thunderbird finally started displaying updates for Planet Mozilla again after just pretending that no new entries were available for a couple of weeks. (This is a problem I’ve been having off and on for ages, it’s been on the bug tracker for ages, and people wonder why I’m considering switching to a mix of some less buggy native feed reader and a less bloated IMAP+NNTP solution like Sylpheed.)

I was looking for an alternatives of Google reader as Google is closing it’s reader service. MicroRSS seems to be a good option.
